The term true colloidal silver is used to describe a silver colloid wherein the silver content is composed of silver nanoparticles in majority as compared to silver ions. This term was coined back in the 90’s by the Colloidal Science Laboratory.

In order for colloidal silver to be tagged with the label “true” it needed to have a high concentration of nanoparticles in its total silver content. The nanoparticle count must be over the 50% mark. The solution is basically composed of silver ions along with nanoparticles.

Measuring true colloidal silver

The concentration of silver can be measured using an atomic absorption or atomic emission spectroscopy. It is expressed in parts per million which is the basic unit of measurement for colloidal silver.

PPM basically determines the ratio of the silver mass relative to the water in which it is present. For example nPPM means there are n milligrams of silver in one liter of water. As mentioned above true colloidal silver refers to the concentration of silver nanoparticles in the liquid and not the total silver concentration.

True silver colloids can exist in any colloidal silver liquid irrespective of its concentration as long as nanoparticles form the majority of the content.

Ionic silver products in general have a much lower percentage of nanoparticles when compared with true colloidal silver. This is why such products are simply referred to as ionic silver.

How to determine true colloidal silver

In order to determine whether a silver concentration is true colloidal silver or not the nanoparticle concentration must be calculated independent of the silver ion content.

Majority of the silver concentration products are composed of both silver ions and nanoparticles. This is why a method to separate these two contents was developed.

The correct process for separating the silver nanoparticles from the silver ions came about after years of trial and error. Scientists were able to determine the G-forces and time intervals that would be required to separate the two liquids.

Scientists were also able to determine the separation of the two liquids using dynamic light scattering techniques. A powerful beam would be used to pass through the liquids. Individual photons from the nanoparticles could then be counted.

Digital signal processing algorithms would then be used to process the reflected laser energy. This was a very important technique that was essential to determine the value of true colloidal silver.

After the two items have been separated it can easily be discerned whether the liquid at bay is in fact true colloidal silver or not. As mentioned above the value percent of true colloidal silver will be composed of 50% nanoparticles.

Unfortunately there is no way of determining whether a silver concentration is true colloidal silver apart from the detailed laboratory mentioned in brief above.

You will be able to find many colloidal silver products being advertised as true colloidal silver whereas in reality the manufacturing company does not have any idea about nanoparticle percentage in their product.
